The United States is already the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=64844\">largest exporter in the world<\/a>\u00a0with 15.4 Bcf\/d of capacity.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"inbrief\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/images\/2025.10.16\/main.svg\" alt=\"north america's liquefied natural gas export capacity by project\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"source\"><strong>Data source:\u00a0<\/strong>U.S. Energy Information Administration,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/naturalgas\/data.php#imports\"><em>Liquefaction Capacity File<\/em><\/a>, and trade press<br \/>\n<strong>Note:\u00a0<\/strong>Export capacity shown is project&#8217;s baseload capacity. LNG=liquefied natural gas; FLNG=floating liquefied natural gas<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>More broadly, LNG export capacity in North America is on track to increase from 11.4 Bcf\/d at the beginning of 2024 to 28.7 Bcf\/d in 2029, if projects currently under construction begin operations as planned. Exporters in Canada and Mexico have announced plans to add 2.5 Bcf\/d and 0.6 Bcf\/d of capacity over the same period, respectively. North American export capacity additions will total\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/data-and-statistics\/charts\/cumulative-lng-liquefaction-capacity-additions-from-post-fid-projects\">over 50% of expected global additions<\/a>\u00a0through 2029, according to the International Energy Agency.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/images\/2025.10.16\/chart2.svg\" alt=\"north america liquefied natural gas export facilities, existing and under construction\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"source\"><strong>Data source:\u00a0<\/strong>U.S. Energy Information Administration,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/naturalgas\/data.php#imports\"><em>Liquefaction Capacity File<\/em><\/a>, and trade press<br \/>\n<strong>Note:\u00a0<\/strong>Bcf\/d=billion cubic feet per day; LNG=liquefied natural gas; FLNG=floating liquefied natural gas<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>United States:\u00a0<\/strong>The planned liquefaction capacity additions will be concentrated around the U.S. Gulf Coast, already the largest hub for LNG exports in the Atlantic Basin. To supply these terminals, new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/naturalgas\/pipelines\/EIA-NaturalGasPipelineProjects_Jul2025.xlsx\">pipeline projects<\/a>\u00a0will be built to transport natural gas from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=64744\">production areas<\/a>. However, pipeline construction delays remain a supply risk for new terminals.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=64224\">Plaquemines LNG<\/a>\u00a0Phase 1 shipped its first cargo in December 2024. Plaquemines LNG Phase 2 and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=64704\">Corpus Christi Stage III<\/a>\u00a0began shipping cargoes earlier in 2025, but they have not yet begun commercial operation. Five additional LNG export projects in the United States have reached\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/tools\/glossary\/index.php?id=Final%20investment%20decision\">final investment decision<\/a>\u00a0(FID) and are currently under construction:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Port Arthur LNG Phase 1 (1.6 Bcf\/d)<\/li>\n<li>Rio Grande LNG (2.1 Bcf\/d)<\/li>\n<li>Woodside Louisiana LNG (2.2 Bcf\/d)<\/li>\n<li>Golden Pass LNG (2.1 Bcf\/d)<\/li>\n<li>CP2 Phase 1 (2.0 Bcf\/d)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Canada:\u00a0<\/strong>On July 1, LNG Canada\u2014the nation\u2019s first LNG export terminal\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/canada-ships-first-lng-export-cargo-pacific-coast-2025-07-01\/\">shipped its first cargo<\/a>\u00a0from Train 1 after achieving\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/lng-canada-produces-first-liquefied-natural-gas-export-sources-say-2025-06-22\/\">first LNG production<\/a>\u00a0in late June. LNG Canada, located in British Columbia, can produce a combined 1.84 Bcf\/d from two liquefaction trains (0.9 Bcf\/d per train), and the facility is anticipated to reach full capacity in 2026. A proposed second phase of the project would double the export capacity to 3.68 Bcf\/d and expand the facility to four trains, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/natural-resources.canada.ca\/energy-sources\/fossil-fuels\/canadian-liquified-natural-gas-projects\">Canada Energy Regulator<\/a>\u00a0(CER). The expansion is expected to come online after 2029.<\/p>\n<p>Canada\u2019s new LNG capacity will be on the west coast of North America,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/natural-resources.canada.ca\/energy-sources\/fossil-fuels\/canada-creating-competitive-environment-liquefied-natural-gas#:~:text=LNG%20projects%20in,adds%20to%20costs.\">reducing shipping times to Asian markets by 50%<\/a>\u00a0compared with exports from U.S. Gulf Coast terminals, and will source feedgas from the Montney Formation in the western provinces of Alberta and British Columbia. Two other projects with a combined capacity of 0.7 Bcf\/d are currently under construction in Western Canada.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/naturalgas\/weekly\/archivenew_ngwu\/2016\/11_17\/\">Woodfibre LNG<\/a>, with an export capacity of 0.3 Bcf\/d, is expected to start LNG exports in 2027. Cedar LNG\u2014a floating LNG project with capacity to liquefy up to 0.4 Bcf\/d\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pembina.com\/operations\/partnerships\/cedar-lng\/\">reached FID<\/a>\u00a0in June 2024 and is expected to begin LNG exports in 2028.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mexico:\u00a0<\/strong>Developers are currently constructing two LNG export projects in Mexico with a combined capacity of 0.6 Bcf\/d\u2014the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=60944\">Fast LNG Altamira<\/a>\u00a0Floating LNG (FLNG) production vessel (FLNG2), which has a capacity to liquefy up to 0.2 Bcf\/d off the east coast of Mexico, and Energ\u00eda Costa Azul (0.4 Bcf\/d export capacity) on Mexico&#8217;s west coast. Both projects will source feedgas from sources in the United States. Mexico\u2019s first LNG export cargo was produced aboard\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=62844\">Fast LNG Altamira FLNG1<\/a>\u00a0in August 2024, and natural gas transported on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tcenergy.com\/operations\/natural-gas\/sur-de-texas-tuxpan-pipeline\/\">Sur de Texas-Tuxpan natural gas pipeline<\/a>\u00a0supplies this project.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>This article was published by the US Energy Information Administration on Oct. 16, 2025.
