U.S.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/totalenergy\/data\/browser\/index.php?tbl=T01.02#\/?f=A&amp;start=1949&amp;end=2024&amp;charted=14\">total energy production<\/a>\u00a0was more than 103 quadrillion\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/energyexplained\/units-and-calculators\/british-thermal-units.php\">British thermal units<\/a> in 2024, a 1 per cent increase from the previous record set in 2023. Several energy sources\u2014natural gas, crude oil, natural gas plant liquids, biofuels, solar, and wind\u2014each set domestic production records last year.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"inbrief\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/images\/2025.06.09\/main.svg\" alt=\"U.S. energy production by primary source\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"source\"><strong>Data source:\u00a0<\/strong>U.S. Energy Information Administration,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/totalenergy\/data\/monthly\/\"><em>Monthly Energy Review<\/em><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Data values:\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/totalenergy\/data\/browser\/index.php?tbl=T01.02#\/?f=A&amp;start=1950&amp;end=2024&amp;charted=1-2-3-4-6-13\">Primary Energy Production by Source<\/a><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Natural gas accounted for about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/totalenergy\/data\/browser\/index.php?tbl=T01.02#\/?f=A&amp;start=1949&amp;end=2024&amp;charted=2-14\">38 per cent of U.S. total energy production<\/a>\u00a0in 2024 and has been the largest source of U.S. domestic energy production every year since 2011, when it surpassed coal. U.S.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/totalenergy\/data\/browser\/index.php?tbl=T04.01#\/?f=A&amp;start=1949&amp;end=2024&amp;charted=3\">dry natural gas production<\/a>\u00a0was nearly 38 trillion cubic feet, about the same as in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Domestic\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/totalenergy\/data\/browser\/index.php?tbl=T01.02#\/?f=A&amp;start=1949&amp;end=2024&amp;charted=3-14\">crude oil<\/a> accounted for about 27 per cent of U.S. total energy production in 2024, as the United States continues to be the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=61545\">world\u2019s top crude oil-producing country<\/a>. U.S. crude oil production was a record\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/totalenergy\/data\/browser\/index.php?tbl=T03.01#\/?f=A&amp;start=1949&amp;end=2024&amp;charted=4\">13.2 million barrels per day<\/a> in 2024, 2 per cent more than the previous record set in 2023. Almost all of the production growth came from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=65024\">Permian region<\/a>\u00a0that spans parts of New Mexico and Texas.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/totalenergy\/data\/browser\/index.php?tbl=T01.02#\/?f=A&amp;start=1949&amp;end=2024&amp;charted=1\">Coal<\/a> accounted for about 10 per cent of U.S. total energy production in 2024. At <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/totalenergy\/data\/browser\/index.php?tbl=T06.01#\/?f=A&amp;start=1949&amp;end=2024&amp;charted=0\">512 million short tons<\/a>, last year\u2019s coal production was the lowest annual output since 1964. Coal was the largest source of U.S. energy production from 1984 through 2010.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/totalenergy\/data\/browser\/index.php?tbl=T04.01#\/?f=A&amp;start=1949&amp;end=2024&amp;charted=2\">Natural gas plant liquids<\/a>\u00a0(NGPL), which includes fuels such as ethane and propane that are associated with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/energyexplained\/natural-gas\/\">natural gas processing<\/a>, accounted for about 9 per cent of U.S. total energy production in 2024. NGPL production was a record <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/totalenergy\/data\/browser\/index.php?tbl=T04.01#\/?f=A&amp;start=1949&amp;end=2024&amp;charted=2\">4 trillion cubic feet<\/a> in 2024, up 7 per cent from 2023. Domestic NGPL production have increased every year since 2005 as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=38592\">U.S. natural gas production and processing capacity<\/a>\u00a0have increased.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/images\/2025.06.09\/chart2.svg\" alt=\"U.S. renewable energy production by primary source\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"source\"><strong>Data source:\u00a0<\/strong>U.S. Energy Information Administration,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/totalenergy\/data\/monthly\/\"><em>Monthly Energy Review<\/em><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Data values:\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/totalenergy\/data\/browser\/index.php?tbl=T10.01#\/?f=A&amp;start=1949&amp;end=2024&amp;charted=6-3-2-13-10-9-7-8\">Renewable Energy Production and Consumption by Source<\/a><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Biofuels, wind, and solar production each set records in 2024, contributing to record\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/totalenergy\/data\/browser\/index.php?tbl=T01.02#\/?f=A&amp;start=1949&amp;end=2024&amp;charted=13\">total renewable energy production<\/a>\u00a0in the United States. In 2024,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/dnav\/pet\/hist\/LeafHandler.ashx?n=PET&amp;s=M_EPOOR_YNP_NUS_MBBLD&amp;f=A\">U.S. total biofuels production<\/a>, which includes\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/totalenergy\/data\/browser\/index.php?tbl=T10.03#\/?f=A&amp;start=1981&amp;end=2024&amp;charted=7\">ethanol<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/totalenergy\/data\/browser\/index.php?tbl=T10.04B#\/?f=A&amp;start=2011&amp;end=2024&amp;charted=5\">renewable diesel<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/totalenergy\/data\/browser\/index.php?tbl=T10.04A#\/?f=A&amp;start=2001&amp;end=2024&amp;charted=5\">biodiesel<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/totalenergy\/data\/browser\/index.php?tbl=T10.04C#\/?f=A&amp;start=2014&amp;end=2024&amp;charted=5\">other biofuels<\/a>\u00a0such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=65204\">sustainable aviation fuel<\/a> (SAF), was a record 1.4 million barrels per day, up 6 per cent from previous records set in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, U.S.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/totalenergy\/data\/browser\/index.php?tbl=T01.02#\/?f=A&amp;start=1949&amp;end=2024&amp;charted=10\">solar<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/totalenergy\/data\/browser\/index.php?tbl=T01.02#\/?f=A&amp;start=1949&amp;end=2024&amp;charted=11\">wind<\/a> production increased by 25 per cent and 8 per cent, respectively, as new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=61424\">generators came online<\/a>. Output from other energy sources that are primarily used for electric power generation either peaked decades ago (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/totalenergy\/data\/browser\/index.php?tbl=T01.02#\/?f=A&amp;start=1949&amp;end=2024&amp;charted=8\">hydropower<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/totalenergy\/data\/browser\/index.php?tbl=T01.02#\/?f=A&amp;start=1949&amp;end=2024&amp;charted=6\">nuclear<\/a>) or fell slightly from their 2023 values (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/totalenergy\/data\/browser\/index.php?tbl=T01.02#\/?f=A&amp;start=1949&amp;end=2024&amp;charted=9\">geothermal<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>We convert sources of energy to common units of heat, called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/energyexplained\/units-and-calculators\/british-thermal-units.php\">British thermal units<\/a>, to compare different types of energy that are usually measured in units that are not directly comparable, such as barrels of crude oil and cubic feet of natural gas.
