In 2024, the United States produced a record amount of energy, according to data in our\u00a0Monthly Energy Review<\/em><\/a>. U.S.\u00a0total energy production<\/a>\u00a0was more than 103 quadrillion\u00a0British thermal units<\/a> in 2024, a 1 per cent increase from the previous record set in 2023. Several energy sources\u2014natural gas, crude oil, natural gas plant liquids, biofuels, solar, and wind\u2014each set domestic production records last year.<\/p>\n

Natural gas accounted for about\u00a038 per cent of U.S. total energy production<\/a>\u00a0in 2024 and has been the largest source of U.S. domestic energy production every year since 2011, when it surpassed coal. U.S.\u00a0dry natural gas production<\/a>\u00a0was nearly 38 trillion cubic feet, about the same as in 2023.<\/p>\n

Domestic\u00a0crude oil<\/a> accounted for about 27 per cent of U.S. total energy production in 2024, as the United States continues to be the\u00a0world\u2019s top crude oil-producing country<\/a>. U.S. crude oil production was a record\u00a013.2 million barrels per day<\/a> in 2024, 2 per cent more than the previous record set in 2023. Almost all of the production growth came from the\u00a0Permian region<\/a>\u00a0that spans parts of New Mexico and Texas.<\/p>\n

Coal<\/a> accounted for about 10 per cent of U.S. total energy production in 2024. At 512 million short tons<\/a>, last year\u2019s coal production was the lowest annual output since 1964. Coal was the largest source of U.S. energy production from 1984 through 2010.<\/p>\n

Natural gas plant liquids<\/a>\u00a0(NGPL), which includes fuels such as ethane and propane that are associated with\u00a0natural gas processing<\/a>, accounted for about 9 per cent of U.S. total energy production in 2024. NGPL production was a record 4 trillion cubic feet<\/a> in 2024, up 7 per cent from 2023. Domestic NGPL production have increased every year since 2005 as\u00a0U.S. natural gas production and processing capacity<\/a>\u00a0have increased.<\/p>\n

Biofuels, wind, and solar production each set records in 2024, contributing to record\u00a0total renewable energy production<\/a>\u00a0in the United States. In 2024,\u00a0U.S. total biofuels production<\/a>, which includes\u00a0ethanol<\/a>,\u00a0renewable diesel<\/a>,\u00a0biodiesel<\/a>, and\u00a0other biofuels<\/a>\u00a0such as\u00a0sustainable aviation fuel<\/a> (SAF), was a record 1.4 million barrels per day, up 6 per cent from previous records set in 2023.<\/p>\n

In 2024, U.S.\u00a0solar<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0wind<\/a> production increased by 25 per cent and 8 per cent, respectively, as new generators came online<\/a>. Output from other energy sources that are primarily used for electric power generation either peaked decades ago (hydropower<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0nuclear<\/a>) or fell slightly from their 2023 values (geothermal<\/a>).<\/p>\n

We convert sources of energy to common units of heat, called\u00a0British thermal units<\/a>, to compare different types of energy that are usually measured in units that are not directly comparable, such as barrels of crude oil and cubic feet of natural gas. Appendix A of our\u00a0Monthly Energy Review<\/em><\/a>\u00a0has the conversion factors that we use for each energy source.<\/p>\n
