The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pris.iaea.org\/PRIS\/WorldStatistics\/OperationalReactorsByCountry.aspx\">next three countries with the largest programs<\/a>\u00a0were France with 57 units (63.0 GW), China with 57 units (55.3 GW), and Russia with 36 units (28.6 GW). Nuclear power\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/totalenergy\/data\/browser\/index.php?tbl=T07.02B#\/?f=A&amp;start=1949&amp;end=2024&amp;charted=5-15\">continues to account for 19<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/totalenergy\/data\/browser\/index.php?tbl=T07.02B#\/?f=A&amp;start=1949&amp;end=2024&amp;charted=5-15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> per cent<\/a>\u00a0of U.S. power sector electricity generation.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"inbrief\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/images\/2025.04.24\/main.svg\" alt=\"U.S. nuclear power plants\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"source\"><strong>Data source:\u00a0<\/strong>U.S. Energy Information Administration,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/electricity\/data\/eia860m\/\"><em>Preliminary Monthly Electric Generator Inventory<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(February 2025)<br \/>\n<strong>Note:\u00a0<\/strong>Alaska and Hawaii do not have nuclear power plants. Capacity values are net summer capacity.<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>America\u2019s nuclear reactor fleet consists of 54\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/tools\/faqs\/faq.php?id=207&amp;t=3\">power plants<\/a>, each of which has one to four operating units.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.southernnuclear.com\/our-plants\/plant-vogtle.html\">Plant Vogtle<\/a>\u00a0in Georgia is the largest nuclear power plant with four reactors and a total generating capacity of around 4.5 GW. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.constellationenergy.com\/our-company\/locations\/location-sites\/r-e-ginna-clean-energy-center.html\">R.E. Ginna<\/a>\u00a0plant in New York is the smallest nuclear power plant with its one 0.6-GW reactor.<\/p>\n<p>After Georgia Power\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=61963\">added one reactor in 2023 and another in 2024<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.southernnuclear.com\/our-plants\/plant-vogtle.html\">Plant Vogtle<\/a>\u00a0became the largest U.S. nuclear power plant, with Units 3 and 4 each having a generating capacity of 1.1 GW. Before the recent addition of the reactors at Vogtle, the Palo Verde plant (3.9 GW) in Arizona was the largest nuclear facility in the United States. The two reactors at Vogtle and one reactor at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tva.com\/newsroom\/watts-bar-2-project\">Watts Bar<\/a>\u00a0in Tennessee are the only new nuclear reactors to come online in the United States since 1996.<\/p>\n<p>Twelve U.S. nuclear power reactors have permanently closed since 2013. However, plant operators have maintained consistently high\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/electricity\/annual\/html\/epa_04_08_b.html\">annual capacity factors<\/a>, which measure how much time units are operating. U.S. nuclear capacity factors have increased in part because of shorter refueling and maintenance outages and improved operational experience.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/images\/2025.04.24\/chart2.svg\" alt=\"U.S. nuclear generating capacity and electricity generation\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"source\"><strong>Data source:\u00a0<\/strong>U.S. Energy Information Administration,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/totalenergy\/data\/monthly\/\"><em>Monthly Energy Review<\/em><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Data values:\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/totalenergy\/data\/browser\/index.php?tbl=T08.01#\/?f=A&amp;start=1999&amp;end=2024&amp;charted=2-1\">Nuclear Energy Overview<\/a><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Some newer policies aim to support continued operations at nuclear power plants. In January 2024, the U.S. Department of Energy provided credits to support the continued operation of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/gdo\/civil-nuclear-credit-program#:~:text=What%20is%20the%20Civil%20Nuclear%20Credit%20Program%3F%20The,save%20thousands%20of%20high-paying%20jobs%20across%20the%20country.\">Diablo Canyon Power Plant<\/a> in California. In 2024, the electricity produced at Diablo Canyon (2.2 GW) accounted for 9 per cent of California\u2019s total electricity generation. More recently, the U.S. Department of Energy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/articles\/doe-approves-loan-disbursement-palisades-nuclear-plant\">approved a loan<\/a>\u00a0to support restarting the Palisades nuclear power plant in Michigan. If realized, Palisades would become the first previously retired nuclear power plant in the United States to return to operating status.<\/p>\n<p>Our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/electricity\/monthly\/\"><em>Electric Power Monthly<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/electricity\/annual\/\"><em>Electric Power Annual<\/em><\/a>\u00a0products compile data from multiple electricity surveys of nuclear power and other electricity generation sources in the United States. Our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/electricity\/gridmonitor\/\">Hourly Electric Grid Monitor<\/a>\u00a0provides near real-time information on the operating status of the grid in the Lower 48 states, and our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/nuclear\/outages\/\">Status of U.S. Nuclear Outages<\/a>\u00a0dashboard compiles daily information on nuclear plants\u2019 operating status based on data reported to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
