Pope Francis received an outpouring of praise for his compassion, humility, and global leadership\u2014not least as a champion for confronting the climate emergency\u2014after the Vatican announced Monday that the pontiff had died at age 88.<\/p>\n

Just months after he was elected in 2013, Francis signalled \u201ca shift in tone and priorities: a Catholic Church less focused on judgment and more open to dialogue, inclusion, and social justice,\u201d CBC\u00a0recalls<\/a>. \u201cLongtime Vatican observers say that along with Francis\u2019s radical refocusing of Church priorities came a hierarchical overhaul, one that will leave as lasting a mark as his revisioning of the Church\u2019s role in the modern world,\u201d while making the institution \u201cmore globally attuned and outward-facing.\u201d<\/p>\n

A major milestone in Francis\u2019 papacy was his 180-page\u00a0encyclical<\/a>\u00a0on climate change,\u00a0Laudato Si\u2019<\/em>\u00a0(Praise Be), published in June 2015.<\/p>\n

\u201cScience and technology are not neutral; from the beginning to the end of a process, various intentions and possibilities are in play and can take on distinct shapes,\u201d he\u00a0wrote<\/a>. \u201cNobody is suggesting a return to the Stone Age, but we do need to slow down and look at reality in a different way, to appropriate the positive and sustainable progress which has been made, but also to recover the values and the great goals swept away by our unrestrained delusions of grandeur.\u201d<\/p>\n

The encyclical cited climate change as \u201cone small sign of the ethical, cultural, and spiritual crisis of modernity,\u201d reflected in a \u201cstructurally perverse\u201d and unequal economic system.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all know that it is not possible to sustain the present level of consumption in developed countries and wealthier sectors of society, where the habit of wasting and discarding has reached unprecedented levels,\u201d Francis wrote. \u201cThe exploitation of the planet has already exceeded acceptable limits and we still have not solved the problem of poverty.\u201d<\/p>\n

That observation reflected Francis\u2019 origins as a front-line priest in Argentina, where people are now mourning him as a \u201cfather of the poor,\u201d Al Jazeera\u00a0reports<\/a>. \u201cIn the earliest days of his papacy, the Argentine Jorge Mario Bergoglio chose to reside in the modest Vatican guest house instead of the apostolic palace, swapped a chauffeured limo for an economy car, and tread in simple black shoes\u2014signalling the Church was under new management,\u201d CBC writes. \u201cDogma would no longer dominate the agenda. In its place: compassion, outreach and humility.\u201d<\/p>\n

Climate author and activist Bill McKibben, a founder of the Third Act seniors\u2019 climate network,\u00a0recalls<\/a>\u00a0Francis as \u201cperhaps the world\u2019s greatest environmental champion\u201d in his The Crucial Years newsletter.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had always felt buoyed by his remarkable spirit,\u201d McKibben writes. \u201cIf he could bring new hope and energy to an institution as hidebound as the Vatican, there was reason for all of us to go on working on our own hidebound institutions\u2014and if he could stand so completely in solidarity with the world\u2019s poor and vulnerable, then it gave the rest of us something to aim for.\u201d<\/p>\n

McKibben praises\u00a0Laudato Si\u2019\u00a0<\/em>as \u201cthe most important document of his papacy and arguably the most important piece of writing so far this millennium.\u201d The book-length encyclical \u201cexists as a response to the climate crisis,\u201d he writes, and \u201cwas absolutely crucial in the lead-up to the Paris climate talks, consolidating elite opinion behind the idea that some kind of deal was required.\u201d But it also \u201cuses the climate crisis to talk in broad and powerful terms about modernity.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the encyclical was released, McKibben recalls, Francis \u201cordered the Vatican to begin construction of a field of solar panels on land it owned near Rome\u2014an agrivoltaic project that would produce not just food but enough solar power to entirely power the city-state that is the Vatican. It is designed, in his words, to provide \u2018the complete energy sustenance of Vatican City State\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meaning that the Vatican \u201cwill soon be the first nation powered entirely by the sun,\u201d McKibben says.<\/p>\n

In 2022, Francis delivered what CBC\u00a0calls<\/a>\u00a0a \u201clandmark apology\u201d for the Catholic Church\u2019s role in Canada\u2019s residential school system\u2014\u201cfirst to a delegation of Indigenous leaders at the Vatican,\u00a0and then again in Maskwacis, Alta.<\/a>, and several more times as he toured Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFrancis\u2019s relationship with Indigenous peoples is profound, because he was the first pope to ever apologize for the church\u2019s wrongdoing with our peoples. And more importantly, he asked for forgiveness,\u201d Phil Fontaine, a residential school survivor and former national chief of the Assembly of First Nations, told CBC\u2019s\u00a0As It Happens<\/em>\u00a0show. \u201cHe understood that burden was on the church to bring out the truth of the church\u2019s treatment of Aboriginal peoples, in particular, the residential school experience. And he was prepared to do something about that challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n

The leaders of Canada\u2019s three major political parties praised Francis during campaign events Monday. Liberal leader Mark Carney \u201cdeclared that the pope\u2019s example shows the need to ensure financial markets don\u2019t overshadow human values of compassion,\u201d the Toronto Star\u00a0reports<\/a>, \u201cand pointed to Pope Francis\u2019s view that environmental degradation and social injustice are linked.\u201d<\/p>\n

Francis \u201cwas a voice of moral clarity, spiritual courage, and boundless compassion. He was in many respects the world\u2019s conscience, never hesitating to challenge the powerful on behalf of the vulnerable,\u201d Carney, a practicing Catholic,\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThrough his teachings and actions, Pope Francis redefined the moral responsibilities of leadership in the 21st century. In\u00a0Laudato si\u2019<\/em>\u00a0(Praised Be), his landmark encyclical, he gave voice to \u2018the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor\u2019, reminding us that ecological degradation and social injustice are deeply intertwined and demand our shared, urgent leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n

As a participant in the pope\u2019s Council for Inclusive Capitalism, \u201cI saw firsthand his unwavering commitment to placing human dignity at the centre of our economic and political systems,\u201d Carney added. Then at a meeting at the Vatican in 2014, \u201cPope Francis issued a challenge that has guided me ever since. He likened humanity to wine\u2014rich, diverse, full of spirit\u2014and the market to grappa\u2014distilled, intense, and at times disconnected. He called on us to \u2018turn grappa back into wine\u2019, to reintegrate human values into our economic lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre acknowledged Francis\u2019 \u201chumility, compassion, and steadfast faith,\u201d the Star says, adding that \u201cthere have been countless millions of Catholics and non-Catholics that have been inspired by his leadership in faith and other domains. Our prayers are with all Catholics as they lay to rest the head of the Catholic Church, and we are in solidarity in remembering him and honouring his contributions.\u201d<\/p>\n

NDP leader Jagmeet Singh said the pope \u201cdidn\u2019t just preach humility and compassion\u2014he lived it. And in doing so, he earned the respect of millions.\u201d Singh called the 2022 residential school apology a \u201cmeaningful step toward truth and accountability\u2014one that brought deep emotions for many Indigenous families and communities.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
