In Cambridge, investors are launching the province\u2019s first zero-carbon industrial complex, while a zero-carbon office building in Waterloo has achieved full energy self-sufficiency, saving C$120,000 annually in electricity costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Eagle Street Industrial Park in Cambridge, Ontario, is one of only eight in Canada to be certified under the CaGBC\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cagbc.org\/news-resources\/technical-documents\/zcb-design-standard-v3\/\"><span class=\"s1\">version 3<\/span><\/a>\u00a0standard for operational and embodied carbon.<\/p>\n<p>The building uses recycled steel and concrete and an air-source heat pump system to reduce emissions from both construction and operations. It doesn\u2019t run on solar yet, but the building\u2019s roof is pre-engineered for future solar installation.<\/p>\n<p>Investor spokesperson Michael Hilson said the sustainability features were designed in to \u201cfuture-proof\u201d the building, so it doesn\u2019t become obsolete as green building standards advance. While green building construction is still more expensive than the alternative, the developers say they\u2019re investing up front for a building that lasts.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, another group of developers are officially reaping the benefits of a zero-carbon office building at the University of Waterloo Research and Technology Park.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/portal.cagbc.org\/cagbcdocs\/zerocarbon\/CaGBC_evolv1_Case_Study_EN.pdf\">Evolv1<\/a>\u00a0[<em>pdf<\/em>] building, Canada\u2019s first zero-carbon building to receive CaGBC design certification upon its completion in 2018, became \u201cself-sufficient in electricity\u201d following the installation of a 768-kilowatt\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vctgroup.com\/evolv1\/\">rooftop and carport solar array<\/a>, SolarEdge said in a release.<\/p>\n<p>Creating more energy than it consumes, the net-positive building\u2019s power generation capacity offset 105 per cent of the facility\u2019s energy use and saved about $360,000 in energy costs over three years.<\/p>\n<p>Evolv1 also includes geothermal energy, electric vehicle charging, and a multitude of other sustainability features. And it is built to look green,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rtpark.uwaterloo.ca\/news\/disrupt-and-evolv-researcher-explores-the-psychology-of-sustainability-in-evolv1\/\">said<\/a>\u00a0Manuel Riemer, a behavioural psychologist involved in the design process. The building includes a 40-foot living wall, a geothermal well, and a 40,000-litre cistern.<\/p>\n<p>Riemer wanted to test whether green building design could make people feel more connected to nature and influence them to make more eco-conscious business choices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also do tours so that the people who work there know the features and they really connect to it as a green building,\u201d Riemer said.<\/p>\n<p>Evolv1\u2019s team wanted to prove that net-zero could sell.
