{"id":64646,"date":"2024-08-20T09:57:54","date_gmt":"2024-08-20T16:57:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/energi.media\/?p=64646"},"modified":"2024-08-20T09:57:54","modified_gmt":"2024-08-20T16:57:54","slug":"wildfire-smoke-increases-dementia-risk-10-year-study-shows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/energi.media\/news\/wildfire-smoke-increases-dementia-risk-10-year-study-shows\/","title":{"rendered":"Wildfire smoke increases dementia risk, 10-year study shows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This article was published by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theenergymix.com\/wildfire-smoke-increases-dementia-risk-10-year-study-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Energy Mix<\/a> on Aug. 20, 2024.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Canadian health experts are reacting after a study in southern California concluded that even tiny added concentrations of a key pollutant in wildfire smoke dramatically increase the risk of dementia.<\/p>\n<p>The results of the 10-year study of more than 1.2 million people \u201csuggest the brain health threat posed by wildfire smoke is higher than other forms of air pollution,\u201d far exceeding the risk from factories or automobile exhaust, the Alzheimer\u2019s Society\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theenergymix.com\/wildfire-smoke-increases-dementia-risk-10-year-study-shows\/study\">reported<\/a>\u00a0<em>[pdf]<\/em>\u00a0in a release last month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResearchers found that the risk of dementia diagnosis due to exposure to PM2.5 in wildfire smoke was notably stronger\u2014even with less exposure\u2014than the risk due to the other sources of PM2.5 air pollution,\u201d the release stated. \u201cExposure to non-wildfire PM2.5 raised the risk of dementia diagnosis, but not as much as wildfire smoke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It described\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theenergymix.com\/particulates-in-wildfire-smoke-activate-immune-cells-to-increase-disease\/\">PM2.5<\/a>\u00a0as \u201ca microscopic mixture of solid and liquid droplets in the air\u201d, about 30 times smaller than the width of the average human hair.<\/p>\n<p>The study found a 21 per cent higher likelihood of a dementia diagnosis for every average increase in PM2.5 concentration of just one microgram\u2014one-millionth of a gram\u2014in a cubic metre of air over a three-year span.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrevious research has found that exposure to PM2.5 is associated with dementia, but in light of our large, long-term study, it\u2019s apparent the risk from exposure due to wildfire smoke is an even bigger concern,\u201d said first author Holly Elser, M.D., Ph.D., a neurology resident at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.<\/p>\n<p>And the findings \u201cappeared most pronounced among individuals from racially and ethnically minoritized groups and in high poverty areas,\u201d added senior author Joan A. Casey, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences at the University of Washington in Seattle.<\/p>\n<p>After\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/climate\/air-quality-wildfires-iqair-1.7145355\">elevated PM2.5 levels<\/a>\u00a0during a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theenergymix.com\/wildfire-tipping-point-set-to-double-or-triple-canadas-climate-emissions\/\">record wildfire season<\/a>\u00a0in 2023, and with residents now beginning to return to the devastated townsite in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theenergymix.com\/parks-canada-counters-smiths-teary-claim-on-jasper-wildfire-response\/\">Jasper, Alberta<\/a>, Canadian health professionals reacted to the study in a release last week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis new research linking wildfire smoke to a disproportionately high risk of dementia\u2014even compared to other forms of air pollution\u2014is deeply concerning,\u201d said Ottawa family physician Dr. Sehjal Bhargava of the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment. \u201cIt underscores the urgent need for immediate safety measures and ambitious climate action to urgently reduce fossil fuel emissions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added that \u201cprotecting our communities\u2014especially those already structurally or personally vulnerable\u2014from the health threats posed by worsening extreme weather events is not just a matter of public health, but of justice for future generations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stephanie Cleland, assistant professor at Simon Fraser University, said the California study \u201cadds to the growing body of evidence that wildfire smoke may pose a significant risk to our cognitive health.
