{"id":64626,"date":"2024-08-16T09:41:01","date_gmt":"2024-08-16T16:41:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/energi.media\/?p=64626"},"modified":"2024-08-16T09:41:01","modified_gmt":"2024-08-16T16:41:01","slug":"fast-emissions-cuts-would-reduce-atmospheric-methane-90-per-cent-in-30-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/energi.media\/news\/fast-emissions-cuts-would-reduce-atmospheric-methane-90-per-cent-in-30-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Fast emissions cuts would reduce atmospheric methane 90 per cent in 30 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This article was published by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theenergymix.com\/fast-reductions-would-reduce-atmospheric-methane-90-in-30-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Energy Mix<\/a> on Aug. 15, 2024.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>By Carrie Buchanan<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Rapid growth in atmospheric methane emissions since 2006, with a marked uptick since 2020, is causing alarm among climate scientists, who say controlling these emissions is critical to keeping global temperature rise below the 1.5\u00b0C threshold.<\/p>\n<p>Fifteen scientists from leading universities, research institutes, and government agencies in the United States, France, the Netherlands, Israel, and Austria\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/science\/articles\/10.3389\/fsci.2024.1349770\/full\">analyse<\/a>\u00a0extensive new data and sound the alarm in a lead article published July 30 in the journal Frontiers in Science.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe abrupt and rapid increase in methane growth rates in the early 2020s is likely attributable largely to the response of wetlands to warming, with additional contributions from fossil fuel use,\u201d the authors write. However, there are many other sources: oil and gas fields, livestock, and rice fields among them.<\/p>\n<p>While the major focus in the effort to keep global temperature rise below 1.5\u00b0C has \u201crightly\u201d been on carbon dioxide, the authors say, they also note that methane is far more potent than CO2 as a greenhouse gas. But methane molecules are much shorter-lived, lasting up to a decade, while CO2 can stick around for hundreds of years. These two factors also mean that rapid methane reductions can be highly effective in preventing rising temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf all methane emissions were cut immediately, 90% of accumulated methane would have left the atmosphere within 30 years, providing a swifter way to reduce global heating than focusing just on carbon dioxide,\u201d The Guardian\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/article\/2024\/jul\/30\/methane-emissions-study\">writes<\/a>, citing the paper\u2019s lead author, Drew Shindell of Duke University.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMethane is the strongest lever we can quickly pull to reduce warming between now and 2050,\u201d Shindell said. \u201cThere\u2019s just such a rapid response to cutting it. We\u2019ve already seen the planet warm so much that if we are to avoid worse impacts, we have to reduce methane. Reducing CO2 will protect our grandchildren\u2014reducing methane will protect us now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shindell and his co-authors add that \u201cpolitical will to mitigate methane has recently increased,\u201d particularly after the May, 2021\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/resources\/report\/global-methane-assessment-benefits-and-costs-mitigating-methane-emissions\">release<\/a>\u00a0of the Global Methane Assessment (GMA) by the United Nations Environment Program and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition. The stark assessment\u2014and the potential it showed to effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions through stronger efforts to combat methane emissions\u2014led the U.S. and the European Union to initiate the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theenergymix.com\/global-methane-pledge-needs-tougher-2030-target-experts-say\/\">Global Methane Pledge<\/a>, now signed by 158 nations, to cut emissions at least 30% below 2010 levels by 2030\u2014although experts were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theenergymix.com\/enforcement-gaps-undermine-new-global-methane-pledge\/\">warning<\/a>\u00a0about enforcement gaps for methane before the pledge was even signed.<\/p>\n<p>New technology to monitor methane emissions from the skies can also help. Studies by Stanford University and others\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sustainability.stanford.edu\/news\/better-way-track-methane-skies\">showed<\/a>\u00a0in 2021 that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency was missing about half the methane emissions produced in the U.S. because they only measured sources on the ground.
