{"id":64125,"date":"2024-06-27T09:48:44","date_gmt":"2024-06-27T16:48:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/energi.media\/?p=64125"},"modified":"2024-06-27T09:48:44","modified_gmt":"2024-06-27T16:48:44","slug":"112-european-cities-seek-e650b-to-hit-net-zero-by-2030","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/energi.media\/news\/112-european-cities-seek-e650b-to-hit-net-zero-by-2030\/","title":{"rendered":"112 European cities seek \u20ac650B to hit net-zero by 2030"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This article was published by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theenergymix.com\/112-european-cities-seek-e650b-to-hit-net-zero-by-2030\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Energy Mix<\/a> on June 27, 2024.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>By Mitchell Beer<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The European Union is helping a group of 112 cities track down \u20ac650 billion in public and private financing to bring their climate pollution to net-zero by 2030, while the continent\u2019s European Green Deal morphs from a climate plan to an \u201cagenda of economic modernization\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The cities\u2019 emissions target \u201cis more ambitious than that of most governments, with the 27-country EU and Britain both setting a 2050 deadline,\u201d Euractiv\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/energy-environment\/news\/eu-backs-650-billion-euro-plan-to-help-cities-reach-net-zero-by-2030\/\">reports<\/a>. \u201cTo date, 33 cities have had their plans signed off, including Lyon, Seville, Malm\u00f6, Lisbon, and Florence, with more expected to be approved in October.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Projects on the cities\u2019 wish list \u201ccould include retrofitting buildings to be more energy-efficient and adapting infrastructure to withstand more extreme weather events,\u201d the news story states.<\/p>\n<p>The cities, 100 within the EU bloc and 12 in associated countries, were selected after 377 applied to take part in the EU\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eurocities.eu\/latest\/the-100-climate-neutral-and-smart-cities-by-2030\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">100 Climate Neutral and Smart Cities\u2019 Mission<\/a>, Euractiv says. They\u2019re now developing climate plans with support from the EU and the non-profit Bankers without Borders (BwB).<\/p>\n<p>This week, the EU launched a Climate City Capital Hub to help the cities attract private capital and aggregate smaller projects into large enough bundles to attract financing. The hub will receive financial and technical advice from the European Investment Bank, which issues more than one-quarter of its lending to cities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHistorically, cities have not been significant partners for the private sector, but progress can be much faster if private capital is more involved,\u201d said BwB Executive Director Allison Lobb.<\/p>\n<p>The hub launched just days after an EU official declared that the European Green Deal is an economic agenda, not an ecological one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis adaptation in the EU executive narrative was made clear at a Euractiv event on the future of the EU\u2019s climate policy at the end of May,\u201d the Antwerp-based news outlet\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/energy-environment\/news\/green-deal-is-no-longer-an-ecological-but-an-economic-agenda-says-senior-eu-climate-official\/?utm_source=website&amp;utm_campaign=popular\">reports<\/a>. Now, \u201cindustrial policy is set to be at the heart of the EU\u2019s energy and climate policies in the upcoming policy mandate, as results at the European Parliament elections on June 6-9 confirmed a shift towards the right and a stronger push for competitiveness in the bloc\u2019s economic sectors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should really make it clear that we\u2019re not doing this for the planet: the planet couldn\u2019t care less whether it warms up,\u201d said Kurt Vandenberghe, director-general at the European Commission\u2019s climate department. \u201cWhat really matters is how to make the planet livable for people and to keep our civilization and our economic standards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Until now, the EU has been \u201cquite naive in terms of meeting the climate and energy policies, we basically outsourced cleantech,\u201d added Polish Secretary of State for Climate Krzysztof Bolesta.
