The APC increased booking slots following higher rainfall at Gat\u00fan Lake, increasing Neopanamax crossings of the canal\u2019s larger locks to 10 vessels and Panamax crossings of the smaller locks to 25 vessels.<\/p>\n<p data-type=\"inbrief\"><em><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/images\/2024.06.27\/main.svg\" alt=\"water level at Gatun Lake\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"source\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Data source:\u00a0<\/strong>Panama Canal Authority<\/em><br \/>\n<em><strong>Note:\u00a0<\/strong>June 2024 data is through June 25. No data for 2002<\/em><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The Panama Canal reduced traffic due to a historic drought at Gat\u00fan Lake last year. Water levels at Gat\u00fan Lake, which supplies the water used to operate the canal\u2019s locks, were the lowest since at least 1965.<\/p>\n<p><em><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/images\/2024.06.27\/chart2.svg\" alt=\"shipping routes through the Panama canal\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"source\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Data source:\u00a0<\/strong>U.S. Energy Information Administration<\/em><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The APC limited vessel traffic to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pancanal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/ADV48-2023-Reduction-in-Transits-Due-to-the-Ongoing-Deficit-in-Precipitation-in-the-Canal-Watershed.pdf\">24 crossings per day<\/a>\u00a0on November 7, 2023, down from the typical 34 to 36 per day. Fewer booking slots last year\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=60842\">affected global trade routes<\/a>. Some ships had to take longer routes east through the Suez Canal or around the Cape of Good Hope because of record\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=60842\">delays at the Panama Canal<\/a>. Delays at the canal coupled with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=61363\">disruptions to Red Sea shipping routes<\/a>\u00a0led to higher global shipping rates as fewer vessels were available to carry products.<\/p>\n<p>The APC\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/evtms-rpts.pancanal.com\/eng\/h2o\/index.html\">expects more rainfall during the rainy season<\/a>\u00a0that lasts from May to December because of an expected La Ni\u00f1a this summer, which could result in normal operations this summer or fall.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>This article was published by the US Energy Information Administration on June 27, 2024.
