{"id":64079,"date":"2024-06-25T11:19:17","date_gmt":"2024-06-25T18:19:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/energi.media\/?p=64079"},"modified":"2024-06-25T11:19:17","modified_gmt":"2024-06-25T18:19:17","slug":"big-solar-outshines-big-oil-as-emerging-giants-top-powerhouses-of-petroleum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/energi.media\/news\/big-solar-outshines-big-oil-as-emerging-giants-top-powerhouses-of-petroleum\/","title":{"rendered":"Big Solar outshines Big Oil as emerging giants top \u2018powerhouses of petroleum\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This article was published by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theenergymix.com\/big-solar-outshines-big-oil-as-emerging-giants-top-powerhouses-of-petroleum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Energy Mix<\/a> on June 25, 2024.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>By Energy Mix Staff<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The world\u2019s biggest solar manufacturers, all of them based in China, are delivering more usable energy each year than the top seven oil and gas companies, concludes a blockbuster analysis released earlier this month by Bloomberg News.<\/p>\n<p>While the annual output from Tongwei Co., GCL Technology Holdings Ltd., Xinte Energy Co., Longi Green Energy Technology Co., Trina Solar Co., JA Solar Technology Co., and Jinko Solar Co. is more or less on par with familiar oil companies like Exxon, Chevron, Shell, and BP, the long-term power generation they\u2019re installing each year \u201cis well above what\u2019s available in Big Oil\u2019s geological reserves,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2024-06-13\/solar-power-s-giants-are-providing-more-energy-than-big-oil\">writes<\/a>\u00a0opinion columnist David Fickling.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_custom_content_wrapper single-post-content \">\n<div class=\"entry-content no-share\">\n<div class=\"content-inner\">\n<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\">\n<p>Fickling takes his readers through a series of calculations to compare the oil and gas extracted each year with the new solar panels manufactured, then translates those top-line numbers into what end users actually need and want.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe best way to think about this is to consider what oil companies ultimately provide the world,\u201d he explains. \u201cIt\u2019s not really crude or natural gas, but the vital ingredient locked up in the chemical bonds of those hydrocarbons: energy.\u201d Similarly, solar manufacturers \u201caren\u2019t in the final analysis providing us with panels of silicon and glass, but machines that can harvest power from the sun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both sets of activities \u201cprovide a fresh flow of useful energy to the world every year,\u201d he adds. \u201cAnd by many measures, the solar companies have already overtaken Big Oil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fickling reports that:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The seven biggest privately-held oil companies that \u201cpowered the 20th century\u201d\u2014Exxon, Chevron, Shell, Total\u00c9nergies, BP, ConocoPhillips, and Eni\u2014are still massive enterprises, collectively producing nearly 18 million barrels per day of oil, or the equivalent in natural gas or natural gas liquids.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 But fossil fuel production is incredibly inefficient at turning extracted product into energy that anyone can use. RMI\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theenergymix.com\/fossil-fuel-production-wastes-75-of-primary-energy-loses-4-6t-per-year\/\">estimated<\/a>\u00a0earlier this month that three-quarters of the energy from fossil fuels is wasted before it delivers any value, and Fickling agrees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly about a fifth of the chemical energy in freshly pumped crude ends up being turned into kinetic energy moving cars and trucks, because oil refineries and vehicle engines fritter most of it away as useless heat and noise,\u201d he writes. \u201cGas turbines are a bit more efficient at turning methane into power, but still end up operating at about one-third efficiency once you account for losses from gas well to electrical socket.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 By contrast, the biggest solar manufacturers in China turn polysilicon raw material into solar cells that generate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/data-and-statistics\/data-tools\/unit-converter\">exajoules<\/a>\u00a0of energy, just as oil and gas does. (One exajoule of electricity would be enough to power Italy for a day, Fickling says.) After factoring in the efficiency of the two options, the solar companies\u2019 production of usable energy doesn\u2019t fall too far short of the fossil giants. If the leading solar manufacturer, Tongwei, decides to nearly double its current output by building a big, new polysilicon plant in Inner Mongolia, it\u2019s annual output of useful energy might overtake ExxonMobil\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 But that\u2019s not the whole story. Fickling looks at the energy that each group of producers can deliver before their current capital investments wear out\u2014in the 10 years or so before an oilfield depletes, or the decades before the manufacturing equipment in a solar plant wears out or becomes obsolete. On that basis, \u201cclean power moves clearly into the lead,\u201d with seven solar companies showing up among the top 10 producers and four big oil and gas companies\u2014Shell, ConocoPhillips, BP, and Eni\u2014coming in last.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Even that comparison is still \u201cforgetting one more crucial factor,\u201d Fickling writes. A solar panel sold in 2024 \u201cwill be generating electricity for decades. Most carry 25-year warranties. Oil and gas sold this year, however, will almost all be used up in a matter of months.\u201d On that time scale, the seven top solar companies generate 110 exajoules of energy, compared to a mere 24 across the seven oil and gas giants.<\/p>\n<p>These changes amount to \u201ca remarkable shift,\u201d Fickling writes. \u201cAround the middle of the 20th century, the predecessors of the major international oil companies attained such power that they were nicknamed the Seven Sisters, a group of energy producers with such global scope and influence that they could make or break governments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While many of them are still trying very hard to do that, \u201cseven Chinese companies have a bigger stake in the power source of the 21st century than the Seven Sisters of oil that dominated the 20th,\u201d he notes. That shift helps explain the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2024\/05\/14\/biden-china-tariff-ev-solar\/\">geopolitical angst<\/a>\u201d in the United States, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/opinion\/article-the-liberals-will-be-forced-to-act-on-ev-tariffs-even-if-it-slows-down\/\">now in Canada<\/a>, surrounding the meteoric growth of clean technology in China.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"climate-news-network\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"canadian-press\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"ccnow\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>This article was published by The Energy Mix on June 25, 2024.
