{"id":63780,"date":"2024-05-31T11:09:59","date_gmt":"2024-05-31T18:09:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/energi.media\/?p=63780"},"modified":"2024-05-31T11:09:59","modified_gmt":"2024-05-31T18:09:59","slug":"hydro-quebec-to-develop-its-own-wind-farms-with-10000-mw-target-in-view","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/energi.media\/news\/hydro-quebec-to-develop-its-own-wind-farms-with-10000-mw-target-in-view\/","title":{"rendered":"Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec to develop its own wind farms with 10,000-MW target in view"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This article was published by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theenergymix.com\/hydro-quebec-to-develop-its-own-wind-farms-with-10000-mw-target-in-view\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Energy Mix<\/a> on May 31, 2024.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec is launching a massive development plan to install 10,000 megawatts of new wind capacity, and shifting its own role from power purchaser to developer to get the series of large projects done by 2035.<\/p>\n<p>The mammoth public utility \u201cwill become the main contractor and shareholder of all wind projects over 1,000 megawatts,\u201d CBC\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/montreal\/wind-farms-quebec-hyrdo-1.7219835\">reports<\/a>. \u201cThis will be done in close collaboration with First Nations and municipalities, who will also become shareholders in these projects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe world has changed a lot, and our energy context has changed a lot,\u201d CEO Michael Sabia told a news conference May 30, citing the rise of electric vehicles, battery storage, and the wider push to decarbonize. He said wind can deliver emission-free power \u201cat a lower cost than hydroelectricity or nuclear power,\u201d CBC writes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, wind power is an essential part of the diversification of our system,\u201d Sabia declared. \u201cProjects of scale are necessary to achieve economies of scale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The utility is hoping those scale economies will translate into a 20 per cent saving for Quebec ratepayers, CBC says.<\/p>\n<p>Hydro announced last March that it will procure more than 1,500 MW of new capacity from private developers, and Sabia said those operators will still have a role in individual projects of up to 350 MW.<\/p>\n<p>But it will take projects \u201cof an unprecedented size and scale for Canada\u201d to hit the province\u2019s 10-gigawatt target in just a decade, CBC writes. \u201cHydro-Qu\u00e9bec is focusing on vast, open spaces in the north of the province where such infrastructure will have minimal impact on communities,\u201d and \u201ceach site will need several hundred wind turbines\u201d to hit the overall target.<\/p>\n<p>By comparison, CBC says, the 364-MW, 164-turbine Seigneurie de Beaupr\u00e9 wind farm, about 80 kilometres east of Quebec City, is currently one of Canada\u2019s biggest wind farms.<\/p>\n<p>Sabia stressed that local buy-in will be a must before new wind farms are approved. \u201cWithout community acceptance, there will be no project, period,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement earned early praise from the Liberal opposition in the National Assembly and from Nature Qu\u00e9bec Director General Alice-Anne Simard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec as the prime contractor for large-scale wind development projects will enable planning and predictability that will be beneficial for achieving the objectives of its plan,\u201d MNA Greg Kelley, the Liberals\u2019 energy critic, said on social media.<\/p>\n<p>Simard said the announcement showed the utility \u201cfinally getting on the right track to ensure coherent wind development in the region by limiting impacts on natural environments and communities as much as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>This article was published by The Energy Mix on May 31, 2024.
