{"id":63740,"date":"2024-05-30T09:59:26","date_gmt":"2024-05-30T16:59:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/energi.media\/?p=63740"},"modified":"2024-05-30T09:59:26","modified_gmt":"2024-05-30T16:59:26","slug":"university-of-toronto-residence-sets-green-design-benchmark","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/energi.media\/news\/university-of-toronto-residence-sets-green-design-benchmark\/","title":{"rendered":"University of Toronto residence sets green design benchmark"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This article was published by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theenergymix.com\/university-of-toronto-residence-sets-green-design-benchmark\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Energy Mix<\/a> on May 29, 2024.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>By Gaye Taylor<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>A nine-storey building on the University of Toronto Scarborough campus has been certified as Canada\u2019s largest Passive House Classic structure.<\/p>\n<p>The 24,620-square-metre Harmony Commons Student Residence houses 746 students and is designed to be both eco-friendly and community sustaining,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sustainablebiz.ca\/u-of-t-scarborough-home-to-canadas-largest-passive-house-building\">writes<\/a>\u00a0Sustainable Biz.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_custom_content_wrapper single-post-content \">\n<div class=\"entry-content no-share\">\n<div class=\"content-inner\">\n<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\">\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/handel-architects\/images\/Harmony-Commons-University-of-Toronto-Scarborough.pdf\">residence<\/a>\u00a0met the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.passivehousecanada.com\/passive-house-building-certification\/?gad_source=1&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwpNuyBhCuARIsANJqL9MilU1ptXYOJFTQ-BaTd6GogW-_FSEYTU_L6LS0h73mFq5vAR7RvFQaAuShEALw_wcB\">Passive House Classic certification standard<\/a>\u00a0through a combination of factors: it is equipped with the minimum 200 millimetres of insulation beneath its green roof, triple-glazed windows, an energy recovery ventilation system that transfers heat from stale air, and a system for wastewater heat recovery.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike smaller Passive House builds that usually rely on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/passivehouseaccelerator.com\/projects\/university-of-toronto-scarborough-student-residence-hall\">solar gain<\/a>\u00a0for heat, Harmony Commons uses \u201cinternal thermal gains\u201d\u2014like heat from residents\u2019 bodies and their electronics and appliances\u2014to keep things cozy inside.<\/p>\n<p>The building retains all this \u201cwaste\u201d heat so well that keeping the residence cool enough in the warmer months was one of the biggest design challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll need [cooling] further into October and probably in March,\u201d passive house consultant Lois Arena\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/science\/what-on-earth-net-zero-emissions-accountability-1.5808492\">told<\/a>\u00a0CBC News back in November, 2020, as construction work began. But the building\u2019s stable indoor temperatures mean less energy overall is required for cooling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough the up-front costs for such a structure can be about 10% higher than a conventional building, annual fuel use for heating and cooling can be 80-90% lower,\u201d CBC wrote at the time, citing Passive House Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Developed by Fengate Asset Management in partnership with the University of Toronto, Harmony Commons \u201cwas constructed on behalf of the LiUNA [Labourers\u2019 International Union of North America] Pension Fund of Central and Eastern Canada, one of Fengate\u2019s largest investors,\u201d Sustainable Biz says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAchieving Passive House certification for Harmony Commons is the embodiment of LiUNA and Fengate\u2019s values of sustainability and community,\u201d Fengate Real Estate President Jaime McKenna said in an announcement celebrating the formal certification.<\/p>\n<p>LiUNA has an ongoing commitment to building fossil infrastructure alongside what it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liunawc.ca\/energy-projects\">calls<\/a>\u00a0\u201cnew technologies\u201d like solar panels, wind turbines, and green roofs. This \u201call-of-the-above\u201d policy is not aligned with a credible path to climate safety, SHIFT Action Executive Director Adam Scott told\u00a0<em>The Energy Mix,<\/em>\u00a0but the union pension fund\u2019s investment in this project \u201ccertainly is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Six years in the making, Harmony Commons has doubled the residence capacity of U of T\u2019s Scarborough campus. It has also improved the quality of campus life, for residents and others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition to the accommodations, Harmony Commons offers residents a number of onsite amenities including a dining hall, common lounge and study space on each floor, outdoor roof garden and terrace, community kitchen, laundry facilities, and indoor bicycle storage,\u201d Sustainable Biz says.<\/p>\n<p>And the building is beautiful. In a deliberate break with the traditional \u201cquad\u201d structure of student housing, the residence is u-shaped, opening up onto a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/handel-architects\/images\/Harmony-Commons-University-of-Toronto-Scarborough.pdf\">treasured grove of trees<\/a>\u201d\u00a0<em>[pdf].<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Andrew Arifuzzaman, the university\u2019s chief administrative officer, said the building\u2019s impact goes beyond campus. \u201cWe\u2019ve shown the industry that this type of project can be done in this market and at this scale,\u201d Arifuzzaman said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"climate-news-network\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"canadian-press\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"ccnow\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>This article was published by The Energy Mix on May 29, 2024.
