{"id":63508,"date":"2024-05-14T09:48:47","date_gmt":"2024-05-14T16:48:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/energi.media\/?p=63508"},"modified":"2024-05-14T09:48:47","modified_gmt":"2024-05-14T16:48:47","slug":"last-stand-fort-nelson-b-c-faces-extreme-wildfire-despite-seasons-slower-start","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/energi.media\/news\/last-stand-fort-nelson-b-c-faces-extreme-wildfire-despite-seasons-slower-start\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Last Stand\u2019: Fort Nelson, B.C. faces extreme wildfire despite season\u2019s slower start"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This article was published by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theenergymix.com\/last-stand-fort-nelson-b-c-faces-extreme-wildfire-behaviour-despite-seasons-slower-start\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Energy Mix<\/a> on May 14, 2024.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>By Mitchell Beer<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>While Canadian forest management officials reported a slower, less dramatic start to this year\u2019s wildfire season, responders in the town of Fort Nelson, British Columbia were preparing for a \u201clast stand\u201d against a blaze that more than doubled on size on Sunday and was just 1\u00bd kilometres from the edge of town at last report.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre was reporting about 90 fires across country as of last Thursday, 12 of them burning out of control out of control, while warning that \u201cthe risk of hot, dry weather and severe fires remains high,\u201d The Canadian Press\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ca.news.yahoo.com\/start-wildfire-season-better-last-152340128.html\">reported<\/a>. On the same day last year, 200 blazes were already in progress, most of them in Alberta, with 50 of them out of control.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_custom_content_wrapper single-post-content \">\n<div class=\"entry-content no-share\">\n<div class=\"content-inner\">\n<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\">\n<p>\u201cAt the same time last year the situation was quite different,\u201d Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Duperr\u00e9, director of emergency planning for the government operations centre at Public Safety Canada, said last week.<\/p>\n<p>But days later, high winds were pushing the Parker Lake wildfire toward the town of Fort Nelson and the Fort Nelson First Nation, CBC\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/parker-lake-wildfire-update-may-13-1.7202407\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe forecast that I hear is that we\u2019re going to get a westerly flow which could bring the fire closer to the community if it gets up to what it was like on Friday,\u201d Mayor Rob Fraser of the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality said Monday morning. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to keep the fire away from the high fuel areas, so it\u2019s all hands on deck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, after more than 4,700 people had evacuated from the town, fire crews and emergency workers were preparing for a \u201clast stand\u201d if the fire advanced into the town, Fraser\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrt.com\/news\/world\/article\/town-preps-possible-last-stand-as-wildfires-19454550.php\">told<\/a>\u00a0The Associated Press. At that point, the blaze had swelled to nearly 53 square kilometres and was 2\u00bd kilometres away. By 7 AM Monday, it had closed to 1\u00bd kilometres, CBC writes.<\/p>\n<p>The First Nation issued an expanded evacuation order covering one home and \u201cmany cultural sites\u201d on Sunday, the national broadcaster adds.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Extreme Wildfire Behaviour\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Provincial Emergency Preparedness and Climate Readiness Minister Bowinn Ma told AP the area had faced drought conditions since last year, and there was no rain in the forecast. \u201cWe may begin to see volatile wildfire activity later this afternoon,\u201d she added in a media availability Monday morning. \u201cLet\u2019s just say we are extremely concerned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The situation \u201cis evolving rapidly,\u201d Ma added on social media. \u201cBCWS [B.C. Wildfire Service] wildfire crews, local fire crews, helicopters, heavy equipment, and structural protection are responding to the Parker Lake wildfire. They\u2019re doing anything they can to protect homes and the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But as\u00a0<em>The Energy Mix<\/em>\u00a0went to virtual press late Monday night, BCWS said the blaze was showing \u201cextreme wildfire behaviour\u201d as it bore down on the community, The Canadian Press\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/canada\/fort-nelson-wildfire\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, Fraser\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/calgary.citynews.ca\/2024\/05\/11\/fort-nelson-wildfire-doubles\/\">told<\/a>\u00a0CP the fire was sparked when a tree came down in strong winds and fell onto a power line. By then, he said, the community was already keeping a close watch on two \u201choldover\u201d fires from last year\u2019s record wildfire season that had smouldered over the winter, reignited, and were also burning out of control somewhat farther away from town.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen right close to the community, we saw this other one, this third fire kick up yesterday afternoon, and the fire was very dark, or the smoke was very dark,\u201d he said Saturday. \u201cIt was going very high in the air from the community, so you could see that something was going on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With a small number of locals defying the evacuation orders, officials stressed Sunday that it was time to go.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you are still in Fort Nelson, or anywhere in the evacuation order of the Parker Lake wildfire, I encourage you to leave,\u201d Cliff Chapman, director of provincial operations at BCWS, said Sunday evening. \u201cThe fuels are as dry as we have ever seen. The wind is going to be sustained, and it is going to push the fire toward the community. Escape routes may be compromised and visibility will be poor as the fire continues to grow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Rena Moore, who returned home when she got word of the blaze and was one of the few who were still in town Sunday, said her husband\u2019s hotel was housing dozens of wildfire fighters responding to the blaze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf some of us weren\u2019t here to help, feeding them,\u201d she told CBC, \u201cthey\u2019re not going to be able to fight for our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Painful Memories<\/h2>\n<p>In Fort McMurray, which was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theenergymix.com\/wildfire-leaves-fort-mcmurray-with-higher-rates-of-depression-substance-abuse-ptsd\/\">devastated<\/a>\u00a0by the wildfire known as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theenergymix.com\/the-beast-packs-a-monster-climate-punch\/\">The Beast<\/a>\u00a0in 2016, residents were placed on evacuation alert Saturday as an out-of-control fire about 16 kilometres to the southwest \u201cgrew significantly in size,\u201d the Globe and Mail\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/article-wildfires-fort-mcmurray-evacuation-alert\/\">reports<\/a>. \u201cAn overnight temperature drop slowed the fire\u2019s progress, and favourable winds blew the smoke away from the towns, the municipality said, but strong winds Saturday were expected to increase fire activity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Between Saturday and Sunday, the fire grew from 1,500 to 5,500 hectares, CBC\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/edmonton\/alberta-wildfire-fort-mcmurray-1.7202083\">writes<\/a>. But it was still mostly tracking away from the city, and Alberta Wildfire didn\u2019t expect it to grow much on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the fire brought back \u201cpainful memories\u201d for people who lived through The Beast, the Globe says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy wife asked me if I have PTSD, seriously, because I\u2019m constantly checking the news, checking the wildfire app, to see where we are,\u201d said Chris Steedman, whose family rebuilt on the same lot after their home burned down in 2016. \u201cBut with my personality, I\u2019m just the kind of person who doesn\u2019t like waiting for events to happen. I want the fire out, or I want it to do its thing, because I can\u2019t sit around waiting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CBC says the evacuation alert covers the regional municipality of Wood Buffalo, including Fort McMurray, nearby Saprae Creek, several neighbourhoods to the south of town, and Fort McMurray First Nation, which issued its alert before the city did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOverall it\u2019s been an eerie feeling, but kind of a familiar one as well from 2016,\u201d band manager and director of emergency management Cindy Miller told the Globe. \u201cWe wanted to make sure our residents were aware so they are ready, prepared, should it turn into an evacuation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>News reports also had an out-of-control wildfire near Grande Prairie, Alberta growing to about 1,400 hectares as of Sunday afternoon. \u201cSometimes, these smaller municipalities don\u2019t have the capability to fight a wildfire because it is such a big thing that a fire truck couldn\u2019t, potentially, put it out,\u201d said Alberta Wildfire public information officer Jos\u00e9e St-Onge. \u201cSo we\u2019re there to help and we definitely want to support anything that\u2019s happening out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fire activity had Environment and Climate Change Canada issuing 321 air quality statements spanning much of Alberta, including Edmonton, CBC\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/calgary\/alberta-smoke-wildfires-air-quality-1.7202143\">reports<\/a>. The worst conditions were reported in Grande Prairie and Peace River, said ECCC meteorologist Heather Rombough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt does seem like this is the trend that we\u2019re heading toward,\u201d she said. \u201cIt lines up with the science, the research that\u2019s being done on climate change and that sort of thing. I mean, every year is going to be different, so it\u2019s hard to really predict. But it does seem to be becoming more of what the new normal is.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">911 Service \u2018Mostly Restored\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Across much of the Northwest Territories, Yukon, and northern B.C., mobile, land line, and Internet services, including 911 alerts, were \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/north\/911-service-mostly-restored-in-the-n-w-t-yukon-1.7202164\">mostly restored<\/a>\u201d Sunday after a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/north\/perfect-storm-northern-telecom-outage-1.7202120\">unique set<\/a>\u201d of wildfires Friday took out fibre optic cable passing through Fort Nelson as well as the backup at Jean Marie River and Kakisa, NWT.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the first time that we\u2019ve had both our accesses to the Yukon fully severed, since we put in that redundancy,\u201d said Tammy April, vice president of customer experience with telecom company Northwestel. \u201cThis was a little bit of a perfect storm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kwanlin D\u00fcn First Nation Chief Sean Smith told CBC the situation was worrisome.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis incident right now is something to be concerned about,\u201d he said Saturday. But afterwards, it will be important to learn \u201chow can we build up those systems to be more redundant,\u201d knowing that \u201cour whole life is dependent on communications and technology now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, a growing holdover fire\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/north\/highway-1-reopens-jean-marie-river-nwt-1.7201730\">closed<\/a>\u00a0parts of Highway 1 between Enterprise, NWT and the Alberta border, but the road had reopened by Saturday, CBC says. And as of Sunday, wildland firefighters were working to prevent an out-of-control fire from crossing a river toward the community of Fort Liard, 19 kilometres away. The highway connecting the community to B.C. was still closed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are a little bit worried about the fuel and gas situation and stuff,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/north\/mayor-of-fort-liard-n-w-t-thankful-to-have-telecommunications-again-as-wildfire-continues-to-threaten-1.7201965\">said<\/a>\u00a0Mayor Genevieve McLeod. \u201cBut I\u2019m pretty sure everyone\u2019s gassed up at the moment and we\u2019re trying our best not to drain any resources that we do have.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"climate-news-network\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"canadian-press\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"ccnow\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>This article was published by The Energy Mix on May 14, 2024.
