Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced Thursday that she plans to sue fossil fuel companies for knowingly contributing to climate change, harming the state\u2019s economy and ways of life.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s long past time that we step up and hold the fossil fuel companies that are responsible for all these damages accountable,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

With this litigation, Michigan would join\u00a0dozens of local, tribal and state governments<\/a>\u00a0that have\u00a0taken similar steps<\/a>\u00a0to try to make the industry pay for climate damage.<\/p>\n

Nessel said the case is an effort to recover some of what Michigan has lost due to climate change, pointing to severe weather events, risks to agriculture and last winter\u2019s short ski season and canceled sled dog races.<\/p>\n

The department is asking\u00a0outside lawyers to submit proposals to help<\/a>\u00a0with the case, which Nessel said could potentially bring billions to the state to address damages from climate change. Attorneys and law firms can submit proposals through June 5th.<\/p>\n

\u201cA case like this is exhaustive in nature,\u201d she told Interlochen Public Radio. \u201cYou\u2019re going after Big Oil, so you need to have some support in terms of additional attorneys and support staff.\u201d<\/p>\n

Investigations<\/a>\u00a0in 2015 from\u00a0Inside Climate News<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Los Angeles Times<\/a>\u00a0showed that companies like Exxon knew about the dangers of greenhouse gas emissions for decades, but minimized those threats.<\/p>\n

Last month, the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability referenced that reporting, saying that\u00a0its own nearly three-year-long investigation<\/a>\u00a0gave a \u201crare glimpse into the extensive efforts undertaken by fossil fuel companies to deceive the public and investors about their knowledge of the effects of their products on climate change and to undermine efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions.\u201d<\/p>\n

For instance, ahead of a recent congressional hearing, newly revealed documents showed that\u00a0BP executives knew natural gas<\/a>\u00a0was contributing significantly to climate change but promoted it as a \u201cbridge\u201d fuel to replace coal.<\/p>\n

Asked about Michigan\u2019s plans to sue, Ryan Meyers, the American Petroleum Institute\u2019s senior vice president and general counsel, said in an emailed statement that it is part of an \u201congoing, coordinated campaign to wage meritless, politicized lawsuits against a foundational American industry and its workers.\u201d Meyers added that climate policy should be handled in Congress, not the courts.<\/p>\n

The attorney general\u2019s department is working with state agencies to assess the impacts of climate change in Michigan.<\/p>\n

Nessel said the state has successfully pursued similar legal efforts in the past, including against the\u00a0opioid industry<\/a>\u00a0and chemical manufacturers that produce\u00a0PFAS<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
