{"id":63193,"date":"2024-04-26T14:51:24","date_gmt":"2024-04-26T21:51:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/energi.media\/?p=63193"},"modified":"2024-04-26T14:51:24","modified_gmt":"2024-04-26T21:51:24","slug":"ai-technology-weighs-heavy-on-u-s-grid-could-also-help-balance-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/energi.media\/news\/ai-technology-weighs-heavy-on-u-s-grid-could-also-help-balance-it\/","title":{"rendered":"AI technology weighs heavy on U.S. grid, could also help balance it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This article was published by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theenergymix.com\/ai-technology-weighs-heavy-on-u-s-grid-but-could-also-help-balance-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Energy Mix<\/a> on April 25, 2024.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>By Christopher Bonasia<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Even as \u201cabysmal\u201d permitting processes for new power projects prevent grid expansion to meet the massive energy needs of artificial intelligence (AI) companies in the United States, AI technology itself could be deployed to help increase grid efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>New power projects have a hard time connecting to the U.S. grid amid frequent legal fights from environment and community groups, plus layers of regulations and permitting processes,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/us-power-tech-companies-lament-snags-meeting-ai-energy-needs-2024-04-18\/\">writes<\/a>\u00a0Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>The process is \u201cabysmal,\u201d KPMG\u2019s financial management lead for the power sector, Brad Stansberry, told a recent AI and energy sector conference in Washington, DC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s difficult to get anything built quickly,\u201d agreed Michael Keyser, who heads the National Renewables Cooperative Organization. \u201cSo I think it\u2019s a natural outcome of that for why you see data centres and tech companies pursuing their own power purchasing now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As new technologies like generative AI increase demand for electricity, tech companies are forced to contract with power producers directly\u2014or build their own supply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe always assumed there would be power, but obviously that assumption was woefully inaccurate, so now we\u2019re chasing where power is,\u201d said Phill Lawson-Shanks, chief innovation officer at data centre operator Aligned.<\/p>\n<p>Aligned is looking to solve its power supply problem with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theenergymix.com\/canadian-mps-raise-alarm-over-nuclear-energy-drive-for-climate-goals\/\">\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theenergymix.com\/canadian-mps-raise-alarm-over-nuclear-energy-drive-for-climate-goals\/\">small modular reactors<\/a>, while OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is reportedly looking into nuclear fusion\u2014the energy generating process that powers the sun, but is at best decades away from being used here on earth.\u00a0<em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/energymixweekender.substack.com\/p\/nuclear-fusion-shiny-objects-and\">Good luck with that<\/a>\u2014Ed.]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Experts say Altman\u2019s plans are too far off to deal with the present difficulty of powering AI amid a climate crisis, when all efforts need to focus on reducing emissions from electricity generation,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/03\/26\/climate\/ai-energy-nuclear-fusion-climate-intl\/index.html\">\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/03\/26\/climate\/ai-energy-nuclear-fusion-climate-intl\/index.html\">writes<\/a>\u00a0CNN.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, AI could help improve grid performance when used with advanced analytics \u201cto enhance grid forecasting, planning, security, orchestration, and more,\u201d finds a new U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) report. It is already being used in this way, but there will be more opportunities and greater need for AI as \u201cmanaging the complexity of a more dynamic modern grid grows,\u201d DOE<a href=\"https:\/\/liftoff.energy.gov\/innovative-grid-deployment\/\">\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/liftoff.energy.gov\/innovative-grid-deployment\/\">says<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers say the impact of AI\u2019s energy use on carbon emissions can\u2019t be assessed by only looking at its direct impacts. The indirect outcomes of AI\u2014which can be positive or negative\u2014also need to be considered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost discussions so far about AI\u2019s environmental consequences have focused on the direct impacts of these computationally intensive technologies\u2014how much energy, water, or other resources they consume and the amount of greenhouse gases they generate,\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-024-01137-x?utm_source=Live+Audience&amp;utm_campaign=bfa1a4f7b4-nature-briefing-daily-20240423&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_b27a691814-bfa1a4f7b4-51513332\">\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-024-01137-x?utm_source=Live+Audience&amp;utm_campaign=bfa1a4f7b4-nature-briefing-daily-20240423&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_b27a691814-bfa1a4f7b4-51513332\">writes<\/a>\u00a0a team of researchers in the journal Nature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the global repercussions of AI applications for society will be much broader, from transforming health care and education to increasing the efficiency of mining, transportation, and agriculture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>This article was published by The Energy Mix on April 25, 2024.
