Intrastate pipelines are within a single state (that is, they do not cross state lines) and are regulated by state agencies. Interstate pipelines cross state and international borders and are regulated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).<\/p>\n<p><em><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/images\/2024.03.20\/main.svg\" alt=\"annual U.S. natural gas pipeline capacity additions by type\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"source\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Data source:\u00a0<\/strong>U.S. Energy Information Administration,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/naturalgas\/pipelines\/EIA-NaturalGasPipelineProjects_Jan2024.xlsx\">Natural Gas Pipeline Projects Tracker<\/a><\/em><br \/>\n<em><strong>Note:\u00a0<\/strong>Interstate pipelines are pipelines that cross state and international borders and are regulated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Intrastate pipelines are pipelines within a state that do not cross state borders and are regulated by a state agency. Intrastate capacity additions also include projects associated with interstate pipelines that do not cross state borders.<\/em><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Interstate pipeline capacity additions have declined since 2018 and totaled less than 1.0 Bcf\/d last year. New capacity on pipelines crossing state lines accounted for 14 per cent of total new capacity in 2023 compared with 65 per cent in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly all the intrastate pipeline capacity additions in 2023 were located in Texas and Louisiana to serve natural gas demand in U.S. Gulf Coast markets, including liquefied natural gas (LNG) export demand.<\/p>\n<p><em><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/images\/2024.03.20\/chart2.svg\" alt=\"U.S. natural gas intrastate pipelines and projects that added capacity in 2023\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"source\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Data source:\u00a0<\/strong>U.S. Energy Information Administration and company press<\/em><br \/>\n<em><strong>Note:\u00a0<\/strong>LNG=liquefied natural gas<\/em><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Intrastate projects included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Enterprise Products Partners\u2019\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ir.enterpriseproducts.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/enterprise-completes-expansion-acadian-haynesville-extension\">Acadian Haynesville Extension<\/a>: A 0.4 Bcf\/d capacity expansion with added compression on the Acadian System, which delivers natural gas from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=56361\">Haynesville producing region<\/a>\u00a0in northwestern Louisiana to U.S. Gulf Coast markets<\/li>\n<li>Kinder Morgan\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ir.kindermorgan.com\/news\/news-details\/2024\/Kinder-Morgan-Reports-Fourth-Quarter-2023-Financial-Results\/default.aspx#:~:text=On%20November%201,near%20Sinton%2C%20Texas.\">Eagle Ford Project<\/a>: A new 2.0 Bcf\/d pipeline that begins at the Kinder Morgan Texas Pipeline compressor station in Freer, Texas;
