Much of this decline results from lower electricity generation from coal-fired power plants due to higher generation from renewable sources such as solar power. We expect this trend to continue into 2024, with CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions declining 1 per cent relative to 2023.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/images\/2023.11.28\/main.svg\" alt=\"U.S. annual energy-related carbon dioxide emissions by fuel\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"source\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Data source:\u00a0<\/strong>U.S. Energy Information Administration,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/outlooks\/steo\/\">Short-Term Energy Outlook<\/a>, November 2023<\/em><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Almost half of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/outlooks\/steo\/data\/browser\/#\/?v=5&amp;f=A&amp;s=&amp;start=2018&amp;end=2024&amp;linechart=PATCCO2~TETCCO2~NGTCCO2~CXTCCO2&amp;id=&amp;maptype=0&amp;ctype=linechart&amp;map=\">U.S. CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0emissions<\/a>\u00a0result from petroleum consumption, primarily by the transportation sector. In 2023, we estimate that petroleum emissions will remain relatively unchanged, with rising jet fuel consumption offsetting falling gasoline consumption.<\/p>\n<p>Another large source of CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0emissions in the United States is fossil fuel-fired power generation. Natural gas has become the largest source of electricity in the United States because it is a relatively low-cost fuel. Natural gas emissions also result from its consumption in the residential and commercial sectors for space heating and in the industrial sector for manufacturing processes. We estimate that U.S. CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions from natural gas will grow by 1 per cent in 2023 and remain relatively flat in 2024.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/images\/2023.11.28\/chart2.svg\" alt=\"U.S. electric power sector generating capacity\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"source\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Data source:\u00a0<\/strong>U.S. Energy Information Administration,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/outlooks\/steo\/\">Short-Term Energy Outlook<\/a>, November 2023<\/em><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The forecast reduction in CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions is largely due to lower power generation from coal-fired power plants, which we expect to contribute to an 18 per cent decline in coal-related CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions in 2023 and a 5 per cent decline in 2024. The electric power sector has been retiring significant\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=55439\">coal-fired generating capacity<\/a>\u00a0in response to economic competition from natural gas and new renewable generating capacity.<\/p>\n<p>The electric power sector has shifted in recent years toward\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=55960\">renewable energy sources<\/a>. Much of the recent increase in renewable generation is the result of an expected 60 gigawatts of new solar generating capacity entering service during 2023 and 2024.
