{"id":58623,"date":"2022-06-13T16:32:31","date_gmt":"2022-06-13T23:32:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/energi.media\/?p=58623"},"modified":"2022-06-13T16:32:31","modified_gmt":"2022-06-13T23:32:31","slug":"helium-its-not-just-for-balloons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/energi.media\/news\/helium-its-not-just-for-balloons\/","title":{"rendered":"Helium \u2013 it\u2019s not just for balloons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This article was published by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cer-rec.gc.ca\/en\/data-analysis\/energy-markets\/market-snapshots\/2022\/market-snapshot-helium-its-not-just-for-ballons.html?fbclid=IwAR3uDdP3rMcKodsBLqQCf4FlRkWXGQotMDHRA0DMbBHo8I0U6lGGR-oZkgw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canada Energy Regulator<\/a> on May 25, 2022.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Helium is used in high-tech applications including cooling Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machines, the production of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2021\/11\/09\/2330017\/0\/en\/Global-Helium-Market-Analysis-by-Type-Application-By-Region-By-Country-Market-Insights-and-Forecast-with-Impact-of-COVID-19.html\" rel=\"external\">fiber optics, semiconductors (transistors), flat panel displays<\/a>, and in the aerospace industry.<sup id=\"fn1_rf\"><a class=\"fn-lnk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cer-rec.gc.ca\/en\/data-analysis\/energy-markets\/market-snapshots\/2022\/market-snapshot-helium-its-not-just-for-ballons.html?fbclid=IwAR3uDdP3rMcKodsBLqQCf4FlRkWXGQotMDHRA0DMbBHo8I0U6lGGR-oZkgw#fn1\"><span class=\"wb-inv\">(<\/span>1)<\/a><\/sup> In addition to high-tech applications, helium is used as lifting gas in balloons, and can also be used in leak detection for vacuum sealed containers. \u00a0As helium use becomes more common, demand is expected to grow in the future and could be partially met with Canadian-produced helium.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"text-muted\">The future of helium in Canada<\/h3>\n<p>The United States Geological Survey estimates Canada has helium resources of 70\u00a0Billion Cubic Feet (Bcf), the fifth largest in the world.<sup id=\"fn2_rf\"><a class=\"fn-lnk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cer-rec.gc.ca\/en\/data-analysis\/energy-markets\/market-snapshots\/2022\/market-snapshot-helium-its-not-just-for-ballons.html?fbclid=IwAR3uDdP3rMcKodsBLqQCf4FlRkWXGQotMDHRA0DMbBHo8I0U6lGGR-oZkgw#fn2\"><span class=\"wb-inv\">(<\/span>2)<\/a><\/sup> This large resource base has attracted investment, with most interest in helium exploration focused in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Since 2018, land leased for helium exploration has quadrupled in Saskatchewan. In response, the government of Saskatchewan developed an action plan to enable helium development in the province, with the goal of producing 10 per cent of the world\u2019s helium by 2030.<sup id=\"fn3_rf\"><a class=\"fn-lnk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cer-rec.gc.ca\/en\/data-analysis\/energy-markets\/market-snapshots\/2022\/market-snapshot-helium-its-not-just-for-ballons.html?fbclid=IwAR3uDdP3rMcKodsBLqQCf4FlRkWXGQotMDHRA0DMbBHo8I0U6lGGR-oZkgw#fn3\"><span class=\"wb-inv\">(<\/span>3)<\/a><\/sup> Currently, Saskatchewan is the only province in Canada commercially producing helium with about 1 per cent of the world\u2019s helium supply. In Alberta, the provincial government introduced a new royalty rate in 2020, set at 4.25 per cent, in response to interest from potential producers.<sup id=\"fn4_rf\"><a class=\"fn-lnk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cer-rec.gc.ca\/en\/data-analysis\/energy-markets\/market-snapshots\/2022\/market-snapshot-helium-its-not-just-for-ballons.html?fbclid=IwAR3uDdP3rMcKodsBLqQCf4FlRkWXGQotMDHRA0DMbBHo8I0U6lGGR-oZkgw#fn4\"><span class=\"wb-inv\">(<\/span>4)<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Helium produced in Alberta and Saskatchewan would have to be shipped to its destination by truck or rail, as there are currently no dedicated helium pipelines or plans to build them in Canada.<\/p>\n<div class=\"well mrgn-tp-lg\">\n<h2>Helium supply chain<\/h2>\n<p><strong>How is helium produced?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Helium is a non-reactive element that is produced by drilling wells into underground reservoirs and bringing it to the surface as a gas. Most helium is produced alongside natural gas, although it can also be found in reservoirs containing mostly nitrogen. Helium is generally found in low concentrations in underground reservoirs (below 0.1 per cent by volume), although in some helium-rich reservoirs concentrations may be above 10 per cent. Generally, helium can be profitably extracted when concentrations are higher than 0.5 per cent, although this varies based on economic factors such as the price of helium, proximity to markets, and the cost of processing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How is it transported?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Once the mixture containing helium is brought to the surface, the components are separated and then\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/458energy.com\/images\/images\/Site\/Strategie\/supply-chain-europe.png\" rel=\"external\">moved via truck or ship to conditioning facilities<\/a>, where they are prepared for the final consumer.<sup id=\"fn5_rf\"><a class=\"fn-lnk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cer-rec.gc.ca\/en\/data-analysis\/energy-markets\/market-snapshots\/2022\/market-snapshot-helium-its-not-just-for-ballons.html?fbclid=IwAR3uDdP3rMcKodsBLqQCf4FlRkWXGQotMDHRA0DMbBHo8I0U6lGGR-oZkgw#fn5\"><span class=\"wb-inv\">(<\/span>5)<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Helium moved by ship is normally liquified to reduce its volume and therefore reduce costs.<sup id=\"fn6_rf\"><a class=\"fn-lnk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cer-rec.gc.ca\/en\/data-analysis\/energy-markets\/market-snapshots\/2022\/market-snapshot-helium-its-not-just-for-ballons.html?fbclid=IwAR3uDdP3rMcKodsBLqQCf4FlRkWXGQotMDHRA0DMbBHo8I0U6lGGR-oZkgw#fn6\"><span class=\"wb-inv\">(<\/span>6)<\/a><\/sup> Helium can also be moved by pipeline, although this currently only occurs in the United States (U.S.) where the Bureau of Land Management operates a pipeline that supplies over 40 per cent of U.S. helium demand.<sup id=\"fn7_rf\"><a class=\"fn-lnk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cer-rec.gc.ca\/en\/data-analysis\/energy-markets\/market-snapshots\/2022\/market-snapshot-helium-its-not-just-for-ballons.html?fbclid=IwAR3uDdP3rMcKodsBLqQCf4FlRkWXGQotMDHRA0DMbBHo8I0U6lGGR-oZkgw#fn7\"><span class=\"wb-inv\">(<\/span>7)<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Figure\u00a01: Helium concentration in Alberta and Saskatchewan wells<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_58624\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-58624\" style=\"width: 678px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-mh-magazine-content wp-image-58624\" src=\"https:\/\/energi.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/helium-graph-678x381.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"678\" height=\"381\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-58624\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sources: Alberta Energy Regulator, Open File 2021-2: Helium in Southern Saskatchewan<br \/>Description: This map shows the helium concentration in the gases produced from wells in Alberta and Saskatchewan. The United States Geological Survey estimated that Grade-A helium (helium that is refined to 99.997 per cent purity or greater) traded for $214.36 USD per thousand cubic feet (Mcf) on the private market in 2019.
