{"id":58604,"date":"2022-06-13T15:03:30","date_gmt":"2022-06-13T22:03:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/energi.media\/?p=58604"},"modified":"2022-06-13T15:03:30","modified_gmt":"2022-06-13T22:03:30","slug":"eia-expects-high-refinery-margins-to-contribute-to-increasing-fuel-production-this-summer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/energi.media\/news\/eia-expects-high-refinery-margins-to-contribute-to-increasing-fuel-production-this-summer\/","title":{"rendered":"EIA expects high refinery margins to contribute to increasing fuel production this summer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This article was published by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=52718&amp;fbclid=IwAR1r16JXl4j-j3bMzz3QtA3FvI4E4SbY-19bjHfs5VzFXz-hJIG8WX1OWfI#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US Energy Information Administration<\/a> on June 10, 2022.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>By Kevin Hack<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In our June 2022\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/outlooks\/steo\/\"><em>Short-Term Energy Outlook<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(STEO), we forecast that U.S.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/tools\/glossary\/index.php?id=Refinery#:~:text=Refinery%20utilization%20rate%3A%20Represents%20the,refining%20capacity%20of%20the%20units.\">refinery utilization<\/a>\u00a0will be relatively high this summer in response to strong wholesale prices for petroleum products, such as diesel and gasoline, which have increased more than the price of the crude oil used to make them.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/images\/2022.06.10\/main.svg\" alt=\"U.S. crude oil and wholesale petroleum product prices (Jan 2017\ufffd&amp;Dec 2023)\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"source\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Data source:\u00a0<\/strong>U.S. Energy Information Administration,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/outlooks\/steo\/\"><em>Short-Term Energy Outlook\u00a0<\/em>(STEO)<\/a>, June 2022<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The price difference between the price of crude oil and the wholesale price of a refined petroleum product reflects the value of refining crude oil. This difference, known as the crack spread, can indicate refining margins and profitability. Crack spreads for both diesel and gasoline increased in the first several months of 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Gasoline and diesel prices and crack spreads are well above historical averages in response to several factors including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Low inventories for both petroleum products in the United States and globally<\/li>\n<li>Fuel demand increases to near pre-pandemic levels<\/li>\n<li>Relatively low refinery production of both fuels compared with pre-pandemic levels<\/li>\n<li>Reduced petroleum product exports from Russia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In response to these high prices, we expect that refinery utilization will reach a monthly average level of 96 per cent twice this summer, near the upper limits of what refiners can consistently maintain. We expect refinery utilization to average 96 per cent in June, 94 per cent in July, and 96 per cent in August.<\/p>\n<p>We estimate U.S. refinery inputs will average 16.7 million b\/d during the second and third quarters of 2022. This average is lower than the 2019 refinery inputs average of 17.3 million b\/d despite high utilization rates because of reductions in refinery capacity since early 2020.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/petroleum\/weekly\/archive\/2021\/210630\/includes\/analysis_print.php\">U.S. refinery capacity<\/a>\u00a0has fallen by almost 1.0 million b\/d since early 2020 because several refineries were closed or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/petroleum\/weekly\/archive\/2022\/220216\/includes\/analysis_print.php\">converted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/images\/2022.06.10\/chart2.svg\" alt=\"Monthly U.S. refinery capacity and inputs (Jan 2017\ufffd&amp;Dec 2023)\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"source\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Data source:\u00a0<\/strong>U.S. Energy Information Administration,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/outlooks\/steo\/\"><em>Short-Term Energy Outlook\u00a0<\/em>(STEO)<\/a>, June 2022<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>We expect wholesale prices for gasoline and diesel will begin decreasing in the third quarter of 2022, as refinery production increases. Despite our forecast price decline, we expect that wholesale fuel prices will remain well above previous years through the summer, based on higher crude oil prices as well as the ongoing impact of low global inventories.
