ATCO\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atco.com\/en-ca\/about-us\/news\/2020\/122900-atco-to-build-alberta-s-first-hydrogen-blending-project-with-era.html\" rel=\"external\">recently announced pilot project<\/a>\u00a0will use funding from Emissions Reduction Alberta\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eralberta.ca\/apply-for-funding\/natural-gas-challenge-unlocking-innovation-across-albertas-value-chain\/\" rel=\"external\">Natural Gas Challenge<\/a> to blend up to 5 per cent hydrogen into natural gas distribution networks in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. The pilot project is planning to begin in Q1 2021.<\/p>\n<p>There are 3 main methods used to produce hydrogen:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Grey hydrogen<\/strong>\u00a0uses an industrial process called \u2018steam methane reforming\u2019, which uses high temperature steam to separate hydrogen from methane\u2013the main component of natural gas.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Blue hydrogen<\/strong>\u00a0uses the same method as grey hydrogen, except it captures and stores the carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>) emissions resulting from the process.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Green hydrogen<\/strong>\u00a0utilizes renewable electricity and a process called electrolysis (passing an electric current through water) to separate and extract hydrogen molecules from water.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<figure id=\"attachment_55273\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55273\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-55273\" src=\"https:\/\/energi.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/hydrogen-1024x511.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"511\" srcset=\"https:\/\/energi.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/hydrogen-1024x511.png 1024w, https:\/\/energi.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/hydrogen-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/energi.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/hydrogen-768x384.png 768w, https:\/\/energi.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/hydrogen-1536x767.png 1536w, https:\/\/energi.media\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/hydrogen.png 1998w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-55273\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: British Columbia Hydrogen Study<br \/>Description: This bar chart illustrates the range of carbon intensity in hydrogen production. Blue hydrogen provides significant reductions in emission estimates at 22\u00a0g\u00a0CO<sub>2<\/sub>e\/MJ, and green hydrogen has the potential for zero emissions if the electricity used in the electrolysis is emissions-free.<\/p>\n<p>Initially, the Alberta pilot project will use grey hydrogen.
