When organic waste decomposes, it releases methane, which is the primary component of natural gas. Producers can capture and purify this methane and inject it as RNG into existing natural gas streams.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/biogasassociation.ca\/images\/uploads\/documents\/2017\/rng\/The_Renewable_Natural_Gas_Technology_Roadmap.pdf\" rel=\"external\">Since 2010<\/a>, an increasing number of utilities and waste management facilities in British Columbia are producing RNG. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fortisbc.com\/services\/natural-gas-services\" rel=\"external\">Fortis BC, a B.C. utility that distributes natural gas<\/a>, will soon be able to provide roughly 430 000 Gigajoules (GJ), or 0.2 per cent, of total B.C. natural gas end-use demand, with RNG.<\/p>\n<p>Fortis customers can opt-in to pay an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fortisbc.com\/services\/sustainable-energy-options\/renewable-natural-gas\/renewable-natural-gas-rates\" rel=\"external\">additional monthly charge<\/a> to receive a 5 to 100 per cent blend of RNG for residential use. This will require a significant increase in production, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Salim_Abboud\/publication\/268341359_Potential_Production_of_Methane_from_Canadian_Wastes\/links\/568aa3dd08ae1e63f1fbdf11\/Potential-Production-of-Methane-from-Canadian-Wastes.pdf\" rel=\"external\">according to previous technical estimates<\/a>, a 15 per cent blending rate is within B.C.\u2019s potential production capacity.<\/p>\n<p>One growing source of RNG is from landfill waste, which was responsible for approximately 20 per cent of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/environment-climate-change\/services\/managing-reducing-waste\/municipal-solid\/greenhouse-gases.html\" rel=\"external\">Canada&#8217;s total methane emissions<\/a>\u00a0in 2017.
