{"id":52910,"date":"2019-12-12T20:44:36","date_gmt":"2019-12-12T20:44:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/energi.media\/?p=52910"},"modified":"2019-12-12T20:44:36","modified_gmt":"2019-12-12T20:44:36","slug":"eia-explores-indias-projected-energy-consumption","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/energi.media\/news\/eia-explores-indias-projected-energy-consumption\/","title":{"rendered":"EIA explores India\u2019s projected energy consumption"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>By Elizabeth Sendich, Ari Kahan<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>This article was published by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=42295\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">US Energy Information Administration<\/a> on Dec. 12, 2019.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the US Energy Information Administration\u2019s (EIA) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eia.gov\/outlooks\/ieo\/\"><em>International Energy Outlook 2019<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(IEO2019), India has the fastest growing rate of energy consumption globally through 2050.<\/p>\n<p>By 2050, EIA projects in the IEO2019 Reference case that India will consume more energy than the United States by the mid-2040s, and its consumption will remain second only to China through 2050.<\/p>\n<p>EIA explored three alternative outcomes for India\u2019s energy consumption in an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwdev.eia.gov\/outlooks\/ieo\/section_issue_aiso.php\"><em>Issue in Focus<\/em>\u00a0article<\/a> released Dec. 12, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/outlooks\/ieo\/webinar\/\">corresponding webinar<\/a>\u00a0held at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Standard Time.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 588px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/images\/2019.12.12\/main.svg\" alt=\"India primary energy consumption in four IEO2019 cases\" width=\"588\" height=\"276\" border=\"0\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Source:\u00a0U.S. Energy Information Administration,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eia.gov\/outlooks\/ieo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Energy Outlook 2019<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"source\"><\/div>\n<p>Long-term energy consumption projections in India are uncertain because of its rapid rate of change magnified by the size of its economy. The <em>Issue in Focus<\/em>\u00a0article explores two aspects of uncertainty regarding India\u2019s future energy consumption: economic composition by sector and industrial sector energy intensity.<\/p>\n<p>When these assumptions vary, it significantly increases estimates of future energy consumption.<\/p>\n<p>In the IEO2019 Reference case, EIA projects the economy of India to surpass the economies of the European countries that are part of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the United States by the late 2030s to become the second-largest economy in the world, behind only China.<\/p>\n<p>In EIA\u2019s analysis, gross domestic product values for countries and regions are expressed in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Purchasing_power_parity\">purchasing power parity<\/a>\u00a0terms.<\/p>\n<p>The IEO2019 Reference case shows India\u2019s gross domestic product (GDP) growing from $9 trillion in 2018 to $49 trillion in 2050, an average growth rate of more than 5 per cent per year, which is higher than the global average annual growth rate of 3 per cent in the IEO2019 Reference case.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 588px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/images\/2019.12.12\/chart2.svg\" alt=\"gross domestic product of selected countries and regions\" width=\"588\" height=\"276\" border=\"0\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Source:\u00a0U.S. Energy Information Administration,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eia.gov\/outlooks\/ieo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Energy Outlook 2019<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"source\"><\/div>\n<p>India\u2019s economic growth will continue to drive India\u2019s growing energy consumption. In the IEO2019 Reference case, India\u2019s total energy consumption increases from 35 quadrillion British thermal units (Btu) in 2018 to 120 quadrillion Btu in 2050, growing from a 6 per cent share of the world total to 13 per cent. However, annually, the level of GDP in India has a lower energy consumption than some other countries and regions.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 588px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/images\/2019.12.12\/chart3.svg\" alt=\"total energy consumption in selected countries and regions\" width=\"588\" height=\"276\" border=\"0\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Source:\u00a0U.S. Energy Information Administration,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eia.gov\/outlooks\/ieo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Energy Outlook 2019<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"source\"><\/div>\n<p>In the <em>Issue in Focus<\/em>, three alternative cases explore different assumptions that affect India\u2019s projected energy consumption:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Composition case:<\/strong>\u00a0EIA assumes India\u2019s economy shifts toward further growth in manufacturing, which increases energy consumption.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Technology case:<\/strong>\u00a0EIA assumes India\u2019s industrial technology does not advance as quickly as in the IEO2019 Reference case, resulting in greater energy use.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Combination case:\u00a0<\/strong>EIA combines the assumptions in the Composition and Technology cases.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>EIA\u2019s analysis shows that the country&#8217;s industrial activity has a greater effect on India\u2019s energy consumption than technological improvements. In the IEO2019 Composition and Combination cases, where the assumption is that economic growth is more concentrated in manufacturing, energy use in India grows at a greater rate because those industries have higher energy intensities.<\/p>\n<p>In the IEO2019 Combination case, India\u2019s industrial energy consumption grows to 38 quadrillion Btu more in 2050 than in the Reference case.
